Understanding What AODA Website Compliance is

AODA strives to make Ontario accessible to all by the year 2025. This ambitious initiative will take place in multiple stages, spanning two decades. The Information and Communications standard of the AODA impacts all companies with a web presence. There are multiple principles which will impact accessibility standards compliance for websites and web content both now, and in the years to come. The web specific standards are set by the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and range from rules for appearance and visual accessibility, to guidelines for clear and comprehensible content. These standards should be seen as best practice for all web content providers, but are specifically mandated for government bodies of any size, as well as large private organizations.

Compliance with the AODA mandate is required for all new websites and content as of 2014 (WCAG 2.0 level A). Existing websites and content have until 2021 to conform (WCAG 2.0 level AA). These standards apply to all companies which employ greater than 50 individuals. This schedule is meant to give organizations sufficient time to realistically migrate their presence and content into an accessible format.

Key Points – What You Can Do

  • Ensure all images include alt text. By providing accurate and relevant descriptive information for visual components, you are guaranteeing accessibility for users of all ability levels.
  • Use colours appropriately to enhance viewability and contrast. Colours used for content should be optimized for maximum perceptibility among all users.
  • A truly accessible website can be navigated using only a keyboard. Many differently abled users are completely reliant on a single peripheral device – either the keyboard itself, or a secondary assistive technology which uses keyboard navigation. It is important to take this into account when designing web content.
  • Make use of clear and comprehensible verbiage. The content of a web page should be communicated in the simplest possible terms in order to reach the broadest audience. Even highly technical information can be broken down into smaller, more intelligible, parts.
